About The Hayden Fund

Michael and Julie Kennedy created the Hayden Kennedy Public Lands Defense Fund to honor their son's love of outdoor adventure. Hayden was an accomplished climber and skier who cared deeply about America's public lands. In recent years, some members of Congress and the Administration have launched a series of attacks against both specific places and the laws and policies that protect our public lands. The sheer number of bills, executive orders, and policy changes that seek to diminish, dismantle, or dispose of our public lands is unprecedented.

The Hayden Kennedy Public Lands Defense Fund is administered by Access Fund, the national non-profit organization that protects America's climbing areas, in partnership with Black Diamond Equipment, and Patagonia. The three organizations work together with the Kennedy family to deploy these funds in the defense of America's public lands.

The Hayden Fund at Indian Creek

The Indian Creek climbing area in the iconic Utah desert inspired Hayden and countless other young climbers. This unique landscape within the Bears Ears region is where Hayden and many climbers first discovered their passion for climbing, and their fervent desire to protect America’s wild places.

Like public lands all over the United States, Indian Creek has come under increasing pressure as budgets are reduced and land management planning trends toward industrial and extractive uses. To ensure that Indian Creek isn’t ruined by misguided public policy or over-use, the Hayden Fund is partnering with Access Fund on a three-pronged initiative of Advocacy, Education, and Stewardship.

Building on the generous contributions to date, we are setting out to raise $500,000 for “The Hayden Fund at Indian Creek.” Our hope is to safeguard this beloved American climbing area and ensure its sustainable future.
